URDANETA CITY, Jan. 6 (PNA) — Livelihood and environmental sanitation will be the main thrusts of the city government this year, according to Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr.
In a talk to newsmen, Perez said livelihood is a priority because of the soaring prices of commodities which had affected ordinary families.
He said the city government will mobilize all households to produce their own food, like vegetables, so that they will no longer buy these from the market.
“We will make all families plant their own food,” said Perez as he revealed that the city government is already producing vegetable seedlings in its nurseries to be distributed to all households in the barangays.
He said last year, Urdaneta built infrastructures, like the high-rise Urdaneta City Public Market No. 1 and 2 and others.
This year, it will be different as we will zero in on motivating households to produce their own food that became very prohibitive, he said.
He added that on environmental sanitation, the city will build a material recovery facility at its sanitary landfill in barangay Catablan to ensure that it can produce, among others, fertilizers needed by the farms.
The city seeks to buy machineries that can be used to convert decaying wastes into organic fertilizers, including composts, for sale to farmers at reduced prices. (PNA)

This is good news!
The city government is indeed focusing on livelihood for 2008. First they opened the Urdaneta City Livelihood Training Center that would provide free training for all Urdanetans especially out of school youth and now they are trying to re-introduce backyard gardening so that residents would be self-sufficient to some extent when it comes to food.
It is also about time that the city government gives focus to the environment. I hope the material recovery facility mentioned in the article is top class and can be well maintained even after Perez is no longer mayor.
Since they'll focus on the environment this year, I hope they consider putting up a legit park for the people to have a green sanctuary amidst the hustle & bustle of a fast growing city. I wish they'd also create boulevards (a thoroughfare with considerable landscaping) by lining up roads with plants/trees. Basically, I want us to have a greener Urdaneta.
