The last time I enjoyed a good Filipino movie was back in 2004 - Mano Po 3.
And the last time I got scared out of my wits watching a horror movie was when I watched Shutter from Thailand, so much so that I still double check the inside of my van when night driving
Now after a considerable timeof procrastination, I went in to see Sukob - I got out of the theater satisfied and proud.
I loved his movie for the fact that it isn't some cheap weave of other international horror hits like the Ring, the Grudge, etc. Sukob's scare tactics revolve around Filipinos love of superstitions many of which warn or threaten of disaster or death and a swarm of agony when ignored.
You are not a Filipino if you havent heard of at least one superstitious belief.
Chito Ron~o has once again hit the bulls eye with this one with his incomparable talent of weaving a great story and in this one, showcasing an original plot that stems from a deep cultural and traditional way of living. If this movie is shown in any part of the world, one can say that this is truly Filipino.
Never mind the lackluster acting of Kris Aquino and the annoying voice of her father character.
The sound mixng and effects perfectly blend with the scenes. The makeup is also stellar. I hate looking at dead bodies in real life but the way Bernard Palanca and Kris Aquino were "painted" corpses was outstanding. Ditto with the Sukob creature and voodoo people covered in mud and leaves. The makeup artist should be given the major awards inthis category.
All in all. I'm giving this movie a 4.3 out 5 and I wish there were more movies like this - not necessarily horror movies but those of the same caliber and intensity.
Thanks for stopping by.
