Urdaneta: Urdaneta City Fiesta.. What the hell?!
I love Urdaneta to death but damn! We have one of the crappiest fiestas not just in the province but the entire country.
The people of Urdaneta certainly have the talent & creativity to come up with a concept for the City Fiesta. It's a different story for the city officials. If "Urdaneta City Fiesta" is the best they can come up with then there is something terribly wrong. Maybe Urdaneta does not have an identity? Maybe the officials are either lazy or retarded that they couldn't come up with something that identifies our city? I'm putting my money on the latter.
Urdanetans deserve better. Can't they do "Cattle Festival"? It's a no brainer since Urdaneta is the largest cattle market north of Manila. Heck I'd settle for "Traffic Festival" just to have something relevant to our city.
The festival name isn't the only problem. It's also the way it's "celebrated". Here are some of the activities taken from the december calendar of events & other aspects of the fiesta together with my coments:
Parade - Keep this tradition. What's a festival without a parade? Improvements are badly needed though. Maybe have a common theme/motif. I think this gets fixed once the festival name is set.
Drum & Lyre Competition - I personally love watching this and it's also been a part of the fiesta ever since so keep it.
Teachers' Night - It's good that teachers are given recognition for their sincere efforts but what do they actually do during teacher's night? Do non-teachers go to this event to take part in the celebration?
Balikbayan Night - Thanks to balikbayans for their donations. This helped fund city government projects like the new public market. Question: what goes on during balikbayan night?
Miss Gay Pageant - It's fun to watch. No further comments.
ABC-SK Night - I think this is the beauty pageant for legit ladies. Keep it for the sake of the male populace.
Ballroom Dancing - What's this? Old, rich people partying? Sounds interesting.
Miss Urdaneta City Coronation - Should be renamed to "Miss I'm Filthy Rich". Just like the balikbayan night, it's boring but necessary since the funds raised through this are used for city government projects.
"Peryahan" - It's not in the events calendar but it's always been a part not just of the fiesta but the ber-months in Urdaneta. Improved location & security wouldn't hurt.
Fiesta/Christmas Decoration - Is it just me or does anybody else notice that Urdaneta looks dull during December? It's December and there has to be that festive/Christmas feel. The old & new city halls were barely lit. Decorations need not be expensive. They just have to be creative. I miss the days when zones in every barangay flaunt their parol or belen projects along the road.
From that list, nothing really stands out. A lot of these activities are actually boring and rather useless. I'm not saying we should have these removed but there should be more activities that are actually festive. Festive in the sense that the general populace gets to participate & enjoy the festivities. An example of this is Dagupan's attempt at a guiness record of having the longest barbecue(bangus) grill. I don't think they broke the record but at least they tried and a lot of dagupenos got to participate & enjoy the event. The longest grill gimmick is getting a little old especially now that the town of Sto. Tomas is gunning for that record. They will attempt to break the record currently held by a mexican town (if I'm not mistaken) through their corn grill when they hold their fiesta this february.
I'm not asking for something like the Baguio Flower Festival. That would be asking too much. Baguio does it because that city can afford it. What I'm asking for is to have more activities where every Urdanetan can participate, enjoy and actually feel like they're part of the festival.
