URDANETA CITY—The city of Urdaneta remains the vegetable capital not only of Pangasinan but of the entire Ilocos Region. Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said the town’s vegetable “bagsakan” market, the biggest in the entire Region I, is proof that it is in Urdaneta where vegetables being distributed to various parts of the country are coming from. Perez said Urdaneta is not only the trading center for all sorts of vegetable but is also a big producer of vegetables as well. From 15 to 20 truck loads of vegetables leave Urdaneta City daily for Metro Manila where they are re-distributed to various markets throughout the country. The vegetables come not only from farms in Pangasinan but also from other parts of the Ilocos Region and Cordillera,Perez said. The “Bagsakan” Market has its own cold-storage plants in order to keep vegetables really fresh, he said. Perez added that since the start of the year, he had ordered a massive vegetable planting program to ensure that each household will have plenty of vegetables to eat as well as to sell in the market. The city government re-introduced vegetable gardening as a livelihood activity of every family so that each one can supply the market with their respective products. Perez said the city government distributed hybrid vegetable seeds for each household for planting in their backyards this summer. urdanetacity.blogspot.com/2008/02/urdaneta-city-still-salad-bowl-of.html

This is great news! Glad to see the media giving props to our city. I've always thought of Urdaneta as THE trading center for veggies and livestock. Lately though, Villasis has been claiming to be the vegetable capital of the province. I think this is because of their new bagsakan market along MacArthur highway and their talong festival but come on! Their bagsakan market is nothing compared to Urdaneta's. Although our bagsakan is not along the highway, it is much bigger. Given its size, it cannot even accomodate all vendors. A proof of this is the number of veggie & spice vendors along Aruego St. going towards the Cathedral all the way up to Caviganan & the city auditorium & the memorial park area. Villasis veggie vendors on the other hand are just restricted to their smaller bagsakan market.

The Villasis is just an overpriced version of these small makeshift stalls along McArthur Hway eg. corn in Binalonan, Bagoong, onions and garlic in Urdaneta, Pakwan in Tarlac and Christmas decors in Pampanga. The Petron Gas Station may have a larger Floor Area.

Just for fun, let's compare the Urdaneta City bagsakan with the one in Villasis through google maps. I captured these satellite views from the same elevation such that we can compare the size of one relative to the other. For Urdaneta, I highlighted not only the actual Bagsakan Market but also the surrounding places (sidewalks, auditorium, UTC) where veggies, spices & fruits are also being sold in bulk or per piece. This is evidence that even with the superior size of our city's bagsakan, it still can not acommodate all vendors. For Villasis, I only highlighted their bagsakan. I don't think they use sidewalks as places to sell produce in bulk the way Urdaneta does. The pics.. Galing tracymack!
just a few things on the highlighted areas:
1. Yung mukhang number four, add a left leg to make it look like an H - thats where the old cattle market starts and now is used as bagsakan na rin, i think.
2. Then yung bridge ng H, extend it westwards till it touches what looks like a small I, yan yung corner papuntang memorial park. i usually trucks and jeepneys there with the veggies. some houses are rice storages yata. At times fruits spill into the street.
3. I would include the Public Market na rin for runaway advantage hehehe
