Spanish mayor to grace cityhood anniversary

URDANETA CITY – Mayor Amadito Perez Jr. told the Pangasinan Today that a mayor from Spain will grace the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the cityhood of Urdaneta.
In line with this, the city government has moved the commemoration of its cityhood from the 21st of March to the 24th to pave way for the celebration of the Holy Week .
Don Jose Miguel Santa Maria, Mayor of Ordiza, Spain will visit the city for the second time to join the Urdanetans in celebrating the anniversary of this city, according to Perez.
Santa Maria will do the honors of serving as guest of honor and speaker and to crown the Mr. and Ms. Little Urdaneta City.
Perez said the affair is a popularity in context which is intended to raise funds for the building of another division office of the city.
Thirty percent of the proceeds from the fund raising shall be allotted to support the construction of a livelihood center.
The edifice is also designed to accommodate residents who have the necessary technical skills to land on jobs that could help them become self reliant.
The affair will reel off with a traditional motorcade which will be participated by delegates from the city divisions office, students, non-government organization, business sectors including delegates from Spain.
It will be recalled that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo visited
Spain on December last year to strengthen partnership between the two countries. The move is also intended to preserve the cultural and historical ties the emanated between the two countries as far back as the 16th century.
On January 10, 1998, the Philippine Congress enacted and passed Republic Act 8480 converting the Municipality of Urdaneta as a component city of the Province of Pangasinan.
The electorate in a plebiscite overhelmingly ratified this legislative act and the locality was proclaimed as a city on March 21, 1998.
