STA. BARBARA, Pangasinan—The heavy turnout of supporters in rallies, coupled with the endorsements of political, civic and religious leaders has tilted the balance in favor of Reynaldo Velasco who is running mayor of this town.
Throwing his support at the height of the campaign was undefeated Rep. Generoso Tulagan, whose son, Generoso Tulagan Jr., had teamed up with Velasco in his quest for his father’s seat in Congress.
One after another, barangay leaders in Sta. Barbara volunteered their support to the retired police general despite the heavy use of campaign funds by his opponent.
Velasco, who is challenging comebacking Mayor Carlito Zaplan, is confident he will get the majority votes of his constituents, citing the growing clamor for new politics and better public service in his hometown.
The first to defect to Velasco’s camp were a former vice mayor and four incumbent councilors who topped the municipal council race in 2004. This included former Vice Mayor Ruben Jose, four top incumbent councilors led by Dr. Emmanuel Cabangon, Al Parayno, Ampoy Ocampo and Tanis Francisco.
They were joined by comebacking ex-Councilors Rolly Pasaoa and Pruto Jimenez, Barangay chairman Raul Loresco and television reporter Boyet Paragas.
“This political exercise is a great learning experience for me as I listened my townmates who are clamoring for new leadership, anchored on new politics of reform, change and performance,” Velasco said, noting that Sta. Barbara has stagnated in terms of progress and development and has even been left behind by its neighboring towns and cities, like Urdaneta.
One of his plans, Velasco said, is to make Sta. Barbara the commercial and production suburb of Urdaneta.
“We have started looking at the strengths of Sta. Barbara and found it has not taken advantage of its close proximity to Urdaneta, the fastest growing city in Central Pangasinan. We are determined to make our town the production center for the food and other basic needs of Urdaneta,” he pointed out.
Earlier, Rep. Tulagan openly declared his support for Velasco and his Team Victorey in Sta. Barbara Other personalities that have become active campaigners for Velasco’s team are former Sta. Barbara Mayor Feliciano Bautista, Pontawi Vice Mayor Calaguio, and Sta. Lucia basketball star Marlu Aquino.
