URDANETA CITY -- The city's "Tulungan sa Purok" program introduced by Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. is addressing the food need of the people in this time of crisis.
"I want the people to make it a habit to plant their food need in every available space at their backyard or around their houses," Perez said.
"We are forcing the people to plant vegetable in their surroundings," he remarked.
Perez said there are 24,000 homes in the 34 barangays here. If 14,000 are self-reliant on vegetables, he explained, 10,000 of them buy vegetable regularly.
"With the current prices of food, P200 a day is not enough for a family with several children. Say P100 is allotted to vegetable multiply, this with the 10,000 households, P1 million is being spent on vegetables by those who do not plant or don't have vegetable garden. If each family plants vegetable, they would have a savings of at least P36,000 a year," he added.
Meanwhile, only five percent of the approximately 150,000 population of Urdaneta eat meat everyday because of the rising cost of meat.
The mayor said the Tulungan sa Purok aims to develop food self-reliance.
"That is their defense/shield against the present problem on food. This is also the reason why our people are not that affected by the food crisis," said Perez.
In his meeting with the barangay officials last May 1, Perez said they distributed vegetable seeds to the barangay officials to be planted in their respective barangays. These include seven varieties of high breed vegetables.
The City Government has established its own vegetable nursery.
"We give them seeds but they must also produce their own seeds. The rotting fruits and vegetables at the public market are also a source of seeds," Perez stressed.
According to him, the Tulungan sa Purok is a program to develop self-reliant on food production; for health and sanitation; and cleanliness and beautification.
"I tell the barangay officials to encourage the people help themselves. I also tell them it's the barangay leaders and the barangay officials (and not me) that are being approached first by a person that has nothing to eat," Perez said.
Evaluators composed of representatives from the social welfare and education department, the Urdaneta police, and the City Agriculturist Office are evaluating the performance of the different barangays for the first quarter.
Part of the area being evaluated is peace and order.
Perez said on December 30, recognition would be given to the top 10 outstanding barangays.
The first placer will receive P500,000 worth of projects. The second and third placers will get P400,000 and P300,000 worth of projects, while the fourth to 10th placers will each receive P100,000 worth of projects.
