Lately, there had been several news about BPO companies (Business Process Outsourcing such as call centers, transcription, etc.) showing interest in setting up their operations in "Next Wave Cities" (cities outside metro manila). One of the more popular choices & one that is highly recommended by the Department of trade & Industry (DTI) is our very own City of Urdaneta.
I believe the talks regarding this started when former Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani mentioned during a public talk in Asingan that they (the Shahani's) are setting up their Urdaneta building (The Sanctuary Bldg) to be come home to "several" call centers.
All articles regarding this will be posted in this thread.

December 24, 2007Pangasinan is sleeping giant–Ex Senator ShahaniSource: Dagupan Sunday PunchASINGAN—It is not only Governor Amado Espino Jr. who is saying that Pangasinan is one giant in deep slumber. Former Senator Leticia Ramos Shahani, now working with a non-government organization promoting the welfare of women in the countryside, said she is glad Espino sustained her previous observation before. Shahani, who ran for governor in 1998 but lost, was the first to claim that while other provinces were counting their blessings, all that Pangasinan was doing was to sleep. “Didn’t I tell you that before,” Mrs. Shahani said in a talk during the Regional Taekwondo Championship held on Sunday at the Francisco Sapigao Memorial Sports Center here. “The question is,” she said, “Even the media did not believe me.” Shahani concurred with the statement of Espino that although Pangasinan is the biggest province in the country in terms of population, it is lagging far behind in development among many and even smaller provinces. The former senator and her son Ranjit, former congressman of the Fifth District, are Espino’s close allies in eastern Pangasinan. The former senator lamented that Pangasinan native products, like mangoes, “bagoong” (fish paste), bucayo and even bangus are not getting anywhere. They are the same old products of old that did not grow big with the times, she said. Espino blamed the Agbayanis who ruled theprovince for 29 years, for the sluggish performance of the province in all aspects as Pangasinan remained having the highest poverty incidence despite its size. “I felt bad when I learned that although Pangasinan has the biggest IRA (Internal Revenue Allotment) share among all provinces in the entire country, it also has the biggest incidence of poverty,” said Shahani. In her message to the participants of the sporting event, Shahani urged them that “when you go back to your respective towns, you should help make our province and region great again”. The former senator expressed hope that Pangasinan would soon be a part of Information Technology with Urdaneta City as the hub.
Although she and son Ranjit are now out of the government, they are still helping the province and are expected to play a lead role in bringing IT technology in Pangasinan.
The Shahanis are all set to make their high-rise commercial building in Urdaneta as home for several call centers.“Information technology is one way we can modernize Pangasinan,” the former senator said. At the same time, the former senator called on local officials to get rid of the old traditional way of politicking, including the numbers game jueteng which many people depend on for a living. “We should instead create additional wealth by developing the resources of our big, big province,” she said— LM

Here's an AVP of the Sanctuary Real Estate Development Corporation featuring their Sanctuary IT building. This is the only building in region 1 that is included in PEZA's list of IT parks/buildings.This video also shows some places in Urdaneta such as schools, malls, resorts, etc. "All roads lead to Urdaneta City. The central hub north of Manila."I like it!

Just wanted to share the good news! This is what I'm talking about! At least this school recognizes Urdaneta's potential unlike some shoe-box-type-mall company. ****************************************************Mindanao-wide call center school expands nationwideMonday, April 28, 2008 Source: Philippine StarA Mindanao-wide call center school chain is expanding to Northern Philippines in a bid to establish its presence nationwide. Already operating also in Metro Manila, JIB eAcademy is branching out further in Luzon, particularly Urdaneta in Pangasinan and Vigan in Ilocos Sur, thus making it the biggest call center school with the widest network of partners and industry-validated curriculum. The expansion was announced by JIB eAcademy president Joji Ilagan-Bian, a business and civic leader and an educator, citing the school’s branches in Davao, Manila, General Santos, Butuan, Surigao, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Marawi, and soon in Northern Luzon provinces of Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan. “Also an English school, JIB eAcademy offers lucrative employment to students after finishing 20 days of training at four hours a day,” Bian said. “Our school has forged partnerships with the biggest call centers in Manila, indicating the excellent quality of our facilities, curriculum and its graduates,” Bian added, referring to industry leaders Advanced Contact Solutions, Teletech, Teleperformance, Sykes, E-Telecare, Ventus, and Viventis, including small but prestigious players among others. Just recently, JIB eAcademy has concluded its curriculum upgrading workshop in Cebu for teachers and trainers. “The workshop is part of our efforts to ensure that the quality of our training really meets the actual demands of the big call centers,” Bian pointed out. “And to support our training course, we are now introducing SPEECHworks in all our centers. This is a program geared for self-improvement in speech, focusing on pronunciation and articulation that you don’t really get to learn in traditional schools,” Bian explained. SPEECHworks, according to Bian, will distinguish JIB eAcademy from other speech schools. “It (SPEECHworks) highlights our focus and competence in teaching people how to improve their manner of communication delivery. The end-goal is to really build confidence so that one becomes socially and professionally successful in contact center, business process outsourcing and other careers,” Bian added. More information can be obtained from JIB eAcademy’s main branches at Mabini St, Davao City (tel. 082-3055522) and at E.Rodriguez Jr. Avenue, Libis, Quezon City (tel. 02-6314540) Accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the school chain is owned and operated by the Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation Inc. This two-year course will enable graduates to migrate to Australia and land on high-paying jobs in the culinary and other related sectors of the hospitality industry. ****************************************************Here's the call center school's website: www.jibeacademy.com.ph/

From Main Man's update: urdanetacity.blogspot.com/2008/05/english-profeciency-for-urdanetans-and.htmlWith Urdaneta as one of the key cities chosen to be the next IT and BPO hubs in the Philippines, Global Skills Institute is definitely in the right position when Urdaneta City becomes a Call Center capital between Clark, Pampangga and Baguio City. Courses ranging from call center agent competency to IELTS are included in their impressive lineup. In fact it is so impressive that the Department of Education itself and TESDA have given their thumbs up and written recommendation of the Institute.
Global Skills Institute is founded and headed by Mr. Teofilo Donal Jr. and is located at the 3rd Floor of the Donal Building on McArthur Highway, San Vicente East Urdaneta City, right across from the Lyceum Northern Luzon (LNL) Colleges. That gives Urdaneta two call center schools!

When I went home last weekend, I saw a streamer at the intersection of Alexander St. & High School Drive announcing that UCU now offers Call Center & Medical Transcription courses. If so, that gives Urdaneta THREE call center schools! Our city is really bracing itself for the imminent influx of BPO companies that would make it the IT hub of Region 1. Main Man, Can you confirm if UCU is indeed offering these courses & how many actually enrolled? Pretty Please.. ;D

Reliable source from the Arts and Languages department of UCU says that so far there are no enrollees yet.
Not that bad. They probably need to do more marketing so that people are aware of it.
UCO and Urdaneta Multiservers's doors are open to ideas to help.
